What to Read and Why Home - What to Read and Why
Welcome to the home of all things Awesome!

I am a teacher in Sydney, Australia and in my classrooms, we study a number of wonderful texts. My students then go out and find a number of other texts that they can connect back to the ideas they have encountered in class. This wiki is designed to offer students in my classes (and visitors) some ideas about the texts that they are studying and others they may wish to study through shared notes on the experiences and facts they have encountered.

Much of the information here is about Speculative Fiction and the Gothic Tradition, but you will also find the odd bit of general knowledge, historical theory or Hall of Awesomeness on your travels, as well some short stories and other works by our users.

Feel free to edit and add to the information you find here - more thoughts are never a bad thing. But try to be constructive!

Mr.Lawrence What are you reading?? 12 Mar 26 2009, 1:46 AM EDT by CookieMonsterChris

Especially as my new board begins its exploration of Science Fiction and the Old Guard move on to pastures where they're allowed to read for fun, I'm curious - what are you all reading at the moment?

Myself, I'm reading Musashi, a Japanese novel set in the 16th century, written in the 1930s. It is all about The greatest swordsman who ever lived, Miyamoto Musashi. Enjoying it heaps.

I'm planning to follow it up with The Graveyard book, by Neil Gaiman (my favourite!) and I'm sort of skimming The Great Gatsby.

Attention Sector-11: I have attached the second part of my seminar task from last year to 'The Difference Engine". It's not perfect (9/10), but notice the integrated structure. If you're going to use it as a model, be careful not to waffle as I did in the second half of it.
